How to get the Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate Certification (2021-2023)

Microsoft 365 Certified: Modern Desktop Administrator Associate (from now on, MDAA) was a certification of the Microsoft 365 Certified family issued by Microsoft. It was renamed as Microsoft 365 Certified: Endpoint Administrator Associate in 2023.

IMPORTANT NOTE: the conditions about how to get this certification changed in July 2023. This post explains how it worked from at least 2021 to 2023, but it no longer applies.

As the certificate name implies, it is an associate-level certification, it means, it is intermediate-level.

There are mainly three levels in Microsoft certifications, in ascending order of complexity:

  1. Foundational / Beginner
  2. Associate / Intermediate
  3. Professional / Expert

You needed to pass the following official Microsoft exam before requesting the certification:

  • MD-100
  • MD-101

It is recommended that you have passed MD-100 before preparing MD-101.

How did I apply for MDAA Certification? (2021-2023)

Once you met all requirements and passed all the exams, you got your MDAA certification automatically.

Does the certification expire once I earned it?

Yes, certification could expire after you earned it.
