What is WordPress?

WordPress, abbreviate as WP and more correctly called WordPress.org, is a free and open-source content management system (CMS). Features include a plugin architecture and a template system, referred to within WordPress as “Themes”.

It is written in hypertext preprocessor language and paired with a MySQL or MariaDB database with supported HTTPS.

Originally it was mainly used for creating blogs, but over the time it expanded to create many other works like full websites,

WordPress was used by 42.8% of the top 10 million websites as of October 2021

Differences between WordPress.org and WordPress.com

WordPress.org is the technology behind the content management system (CMS). You need to provide an infrastructure or a platform, like a server, to run WordPress.org. It is owned by WordPress Foundation.

WordPress.com is a service, or more specifically, a Software as a Service (SaaS) platform that provides users cloud access to WordPress.org technology, enabling blogging and other works. You do not need to have an infrastructure or platform to run WordPress.com.

WordPress.com service is run by company Automattic, and it has nothing to do with WordPress.org.

There are many other companies providing blogging services besides WordPress.com, like Blogger, Wix or BlueHost, among others.
