Reinstall Windows XP on Dell Latitude D505

This post details the steps to reinstall Windows XP on a Dell Latitude D505.

Dell Latitute D505 was a laptop from 2004. Its default operating system was Windows XP.

 

Installation Steps

1. Get a bootable unit with Windows XP installer

You can use the original Windows XP CD, as this laptop has a CD-ROM or DVD-ROM reader.

Alternatively, you can use the free Rufus tool to burn the Windows image into a bootable XP.

 

2. Install Windows XP

Boot the computer from the unit where you have the Windows XP installation drive.

Follow the installation wizard instructions to install Windows XP.

 

3. Visit Dell Latitutude D505 support web

Visit Dell Latitude D505 Support web from this link.

All drivers are downloaded from this web:

  1. LAN connection driver | Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection, v.6.4.14.0081 , A04 | R108533.exe
  2. Wi-Fi driver | Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG/2915ABG Network Connection Driver | INTEL_MULTI-DEVICE_A18_R257684.exe
  3. Graphics driver | Intel Extreme Graphics 855 GM, v.6.14.10.4396, A13 | R11509.exe
  4. Audio driver | SIGMATEL STAC 9750 AC97, versión 5.10.0.3952, A15 | R90698.exe
  5. Chipset driver | Intel Mobile Chipset Driver | R114079.exe
  6. SmartCard driver | Texas Instruments PCI 7510/4510 Cardbus Controller with SmartCard, v.1.0.9.11, A03 | R111550.exe
  7. Touch Pad driver | Alps GlidePoint/StickPointer Driver | R89598_5K9CG_SETUP_ZPE.exe

Copy all executables to a USB drive and copy to laptop.

 

4. Install LAN connection driver

On this step we install ethernet controller. After this step, you will be able to connect to the internet through an ethernet cable.

Double click on R108533.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

 

5. Install Wi-Fi connection driver

On this step we install the wireless connection driver. After this step, you will be able to connect to the internet through a Wi-Fi connection.

Double click on INTEL_MULTI-DEVICE_A18_R257684.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

 

6. Install graphics driver

On this step we install the Intel graphics driver. After this step, you will be able to hear sounds from sound card instead of internal beeper.

Double click on R111509.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

Reboot computer when installation is finished.

 

7. Install audio driver

On this step we install the Intel graphics driver. After this step, you will be able to increase screen resolution.

Double click on R90698.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

Follow the instructions of Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility wizard to install the driver.

You may lose internet connection during its installation.

Reboot when installation is finished.

 

8. Install chipset driver

Double click on R111509.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

Follow the instructions of Intel(R) Chipset Software Installation Utility wizard to install the driver.

You may lose internet connection during its installation.

Reboot when installation is finished.

 

9. Install SmartCard driver

Double click on R111550.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions.

 

10. Install Touch Pad driver

On this step we install the touch pad driver. Touch pad works regardless this installation, but a touch pad icon is added to system tray after this.

Double click on R89598_5K9CG_SETUP_ZPE.exe and follow the installation wizard instructions for ALPS Touch Pad Driver.

Reboot system after installation.

 

11. Install web browser

I installed web browser Baidu Browser.

As you get a certificate error each time you visit a web, you may want to ignore certificates. This will make browsing the internet extremely unsafe, do it on your own risk.

Right click on desktop icon and select “Properties”.

Then find “Destination” field, and append this text to the end of the string:
--ignore-certificate-errors
