VoIP is an alternative to the traditional public switched telephone network (PSTN).

VoIP uses videoconferencing protocols H.323 and SIP.
A session border controller (SBC) is a network element deployed to protect SIP-based VoIP networks.
These protocols may use RTP and SRTP.
The standard audio codec used on VoIP (because of H.323) is G.729.
