ISOC
Internet Society (ISOC) is a non-profit organization. It is the legal entity that governs the internet.
IAB
Internet Architecture Board (IAB) designs the internet architecture.
It is composed of people assigned as experts.
IETF
Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) defines internet standards, such as the TCP/IP protocol or LDAP.
It can be joined by anyone.
IERF
Internet engineering research force (IERF) can be joined by volunteers.
IANA
IANA functions for the internet were replaced by ICANN.
W3C
W3C defines standards such as CSS.
ICANN
Internet Corporation for Assigned Name and Numbers (ICANN) is a non-profit international organization based in the USA that assigns reserved numbers an addresses used on the Internet.
Previous to the creation of ICANN, IANA was responsible for this. IANA is an American organization, so when internet became global the responsibility was moved to a non-profit global organization called ICANN.
ICANN registers:
- Unique generic top level domain names (gTLD)
- Country codes (ccTLD) in the Internet.
- IP
- Ports
- DNS / autonomous system
ICANN delegates functions on regional organizations. The regional organization for Europe is called RIPE.
A NIC is a national organization, that is hierarchically below the regional organizations.
The NIC in Spain is red.es
