Family of SAP ERPs

There is a family of SAP ERPs, all of them developed by German company SAP. They are all proprietary solutions.

SAP R/3

SAP R/3 was an ERP developed by German company SAP, currently discontinued.

Its name stands for real-time, 3-tier (presentation-backoffice-database) ERP.

It is proprietary.

It was introduced in the early 1990s.

Its sucessor was SAP ECC, that is included in SAP Business Suite.

SAP ERP

SAP ERP is a suite of applications.

It was introduced in the early 2000s.

SAP ERP components:

  • SAP ECC
  • Industry solutions (IS)

SAP ERP Central Component (ECC) is the central component of SAP ERP. Most of the times when people say SAP ERP they are actually referring to SAP ECC.

SAP S/4HANA

SAP S/4 ERP developed by German company SAP.

Its predecessor was SAP Business Suite / SAP ERP.

It was introduced in 2015.

It is oriented towards small businesses and freelancers.

Tryton

Tryton is written in Python.

It is FOSS under a GPL license.

Metafresh

Metafresh is aimed mainly to manufacturing and logistics-heavy industries.

It is written in Java.

It if a fork of ADempiere.

It is FOSS under a GPL license.

Apache OFBiz

Apache OFBiz is an ERP aimed for big companies.

It is maintained by the Apache Foundation.

It is FOSS under an Apache 2.0 License.

It is dev-oriented and allows deep customization.

Openbravo ERP was an ERP developed by the Spansih company Openbravo.

It is FOSS, but it is no longer maintained.

It must not be confused with the newer Openbravo Commerce Cloud platform, that is proprietary and developed by the French company Orisha that acquired Openbravo.
